Rising Stars Engineering Camp!

Each year, College Tech Prep and North Central State College host the Rising Stars Engineering Camp for two weeks in June. The camp has been in existance since 2000 and has introduced over 800 7th and 8th graders to the wonderful, exciting world of Engineering!

Students will spend most of their time in college labs learning about electronic & mechanical engineering, green engineering, aeronatuical engineering and physics. Students will work on their own and together with other campers as a team. All learning takes place in a hands-on environment. Students will be given a toolbox full of the necessary tools to design and build their own robot. At the end of camp, students will get to race their robot against other campers robots. Students will also learn how to build and power a windmill in the "green engineering" course -- how to build and launch their own rocket in the "aeronautical engineering" course -- and they will learn about how physics impacts engineering and the everyday, things we do in the "physics" course!

Courses will be taught by North Central State College Engineering and Physics faculty and qualified high school instructors -- College Instructors, Brian Baldridge and Rick Karsmizki, will teach the students about electrical and mechnical engineering in the "Robotics" course; Assistant Professor & Chair of Engineering, Randy Storms, will teach the students about rockets in the "Aeronautical Engineering" course; Associate Professor, Gary Woods, will teach the students about "Physics" and Crestline High School teacher, Keith Strickler, will teach the students about green engineering in the "Green Engineering" course.

Student's will enjoy powerful guest speakers and presentations from local businesses such as The Gorman Rupp Company and First Merit Bank. They will learn about the importance of pushing themselves academically in middle school and high school and the importance of continuing their education following high school graduation. They will learn about programs that NC State has to offer, outside of the realm of engineering with interactive visits from our Business, Liberal Arts, & Education Division and also our Health & Public Safety Division.

Students will get to let lose and have fun outside of the classroom, while getting to know their team mates and working together to win challenging and exciting games such as The Horn Honk, The Name Game, Walk the Plank, Water Balloon Volleyball, Magic Boots, The Postman, and a new camp favorite Relay Mania!

Student's that enjoy the camp, generally have an interest in math and science and a strong sense of curiosity. Several of our Rising Stars campers have actually continued their interest after grades 7 and 8 and during their sophomore year of high school they often express an interest in or attend the College-NOW Engineering Academy.

If you believe that this camp is something that your son/daughter, grandchild, niece or nephew, or neighbor would enjoy -- keep reading below for more information!!
