Rising Stars Engineering Camp!
Each year, College Tech Prep and North Central State College host the Rising Stars Engineering Camp for two weeks in June. Each camp is a week long with studestance since 2000 and has introduced over 640 7th and 8th graders to the wonderful exciting world of Engineering!
2009 brought some new changes to Rising Stars! In year's past, students would attend the camp from 11:30 - 5:00, beginning their day with lunch, and then spending 2 1/2 hours each day in lab learning about electonic & mechanical engineering and building their own robot and 2 hours each day learning team building activities and enjoying engaging guest speakers from local businesses and the college.
This year -- students will not only be able to build their own robot and learn about electronic & mechanical engineering, but they will also learn about the new and exciting fields of green engineering, aeronautical engineering, and physics! Students will learn how to build and power a windmill in the "green engineering" course -- they will learn how to build and launch their own rocket in the "aeronautical engineering" course -- and they will learn about how physics affects the everyday simple things that we do in the "physics" course!
Courses will be taught by North Central State College Engineering and Physics faculty -- Instructors, Brian Baldridge and Rick Karsmizki, will teach the students about electrical and mechnical engineering in the "Robotics" course; Assistant Professor & Chair of Engineering, Randy Storms, will teach the students about green engineering in the "Green Engineering" course; Dean of Technology and Workforce, Ken McCreight, will teach the students about rockets in the "Aeronautical Engineering" course; and Associate Professor, Gary Woods, will teach the students about "Physics"
Student's will continue to enjoy the powerful guest speakers from local businesses such as The Gorman Rupp Company and First Merit Bank. They will learn about the importance of pushing themselves academically in middle school and high school and the importance of continuing their education following high school graduation. They will learn about programs that NC State has to offer, outside of the realm of engineering. Students will continue to have fun outside of the classroom labs, while getting to know their team mates and work together as a team with games such as "Flatball", "The Name Game", "Water Balloon Volleyball", and "Magic Boots".
Student's that enjoy the camp, generally have an interest in math and science and a strong sense of curiosity. Several of our Rising Stars campers have actually continued their interest after grades 7 and 8 and during their sophomore year of high school they often express an interest in or attend College-NOW.
If you believe that this camp is something that your son/daughter, grandchild, niece or nephew, or neighbor would enjoy -- keep reading below for more information!!
